The greatest spiritual gift that you should all strive for is LOVE. As Paul continues with his discussion on the spiritual gifts, he lectures the community on the greatest spiritual gift that each should strive to acquire: the gift of love. The problems that the community was dealing with resulted from, and indicated the lack of love within the community. Love is the foundation of, and the bond that holds a community together. It is love that lays the foundation for, and anchors the other gifts of the Spirit. Without love, the gifts that God bestows upon a community cannot be nurtured, for the gifts get nurtured only when they are used. Without love, the gifts of the Spirit will be mistaken for individual talents and will be kept “under lock and key.” It is love that contextualizes the gifts in order that they can contribute to the well-being of the community. Most importantly, Paul tells the community that love is worth investing in since the other gifts don’t endure. A time will come when they will cease to be. However, even in the state of perfection (when we see God face to face), love will still be relevant. In a way, all the other gifts are at the service of love because they are meant to lead those endowed with them to the state of perfection.
