The Holy Spirit, the advocate, will come to convict the world. At first glance, this statement sounds “un-Jesus.” It doesn’t sound like something that would issue from the very person who not only advocated for but also practiced forgiveness, tolerance and compassion. In any case, Jesus had said that the world has already convicted/condemned itself (cf. John 3:18ff) by not opening itself to his message. What Jesus means is that when the Holy Spirit does come to strengthen the disciples, all that Jesus had done and said will be proved to be true. The Holy Spirit will prove that Jesus had indeed been sent from the Father and those who had failed to believe in him will find themselves on the wrong side of judgment. By their own choice, those who had refused to believe in Jesus (“the world”) shall have convicted themselves. It will be the Holy Spirit strengthening Jesus’ disciples that will condemn those who had refused to believe. It will be the signs and wonders that God will work through those who believed in Jesus that will convict the non-believers. By refusing to open themselves to the light who is Jesus, “the world” persists in its own darkness and sin.
