In Jesus Christ, you who were once off have been brought near by the Blood of Christ. The Letter to the Ephesians represents a high point in Pauline theology. In in this letter, not only do we find Paul presenting Christ as supreme over and above all cosmic forces that might be perceived in the universe since he (Christ) is the fullness of creation. To put it simply, in Christ, all the deficiencies that creation brought upon itself when it rebelled are remedied. In the beautiful passage that we read today, Paul sums up the Good News that is Jesus Christ. In Christ, all the nations of the earth have been brought together and formed into a single nation. Those who looked at each other as enemies have become not only friends but most importantly brothers and sisters one to another since in Christ, they have regained their status as sons and daughters of God. Indeed, Christ becomes the fulfillment of creation for in him the goal of creation is attained (the goal of creation is the coming to salvation of all, that is, the gathering of all creation unto God). For in Christ, “all who were scattered (far off) have been brought near and made into one.”
As long as there is a great divide amongst God’s creation, the goal of creation gets frustrated and impossible to be realized. God created out of harmony and for harmony, out of love in order to love. By allowing themselves to sin, men and women move away from this original intent of creation. Jesus Christ comes to bring men and women back into the fold by showing them how to once again live in harmony and love as sons and daughters of God (as creatures of love).
