Nothing like this has ever happened in Israel…Such was the reaction of the crowd as they witnessed the healing of a man who was possessed by demons. It was both a spectacle and an awe-inspiring moment for the crowds. Their amazement was in appreciation of what Jesus was doing in their midst.
For us to fully appreciate the healing miracles of Jesus as the crowds did, we have to re-live or call to mind those trying moments when we have been beset by an illness, even if it was just a slight headache. An illness, a disease, does to a person what its name exactly describes: it ‘
dis-eases’ an individual. Illness makes a person restless and anxious. An ill individual cannot concentrate on anything. Because of pain and other discomforts, a sick person’s involvement in the day-to-day affairs becomes limited. As it were, a sick individual gets "cut off" from the society due to his/her lack of involvement in the affairs of the community. He/she becomes an outsider, sometimes even inside his/her own house and home. Simple things such as conversations become arduous to engage in. If a sick individual is asked what he/she would want more than anything else, without any hesitation, he/she would say: healing. He/she would want to be made whole so that once again, he/she can afford to smile, laugh, joke, engage in a conversation, and even go for a walk. This gift of wholeness is what Jesus brought to those who were sick.
In the healing of the possessed man, however, Jesus did more than make him whole. Jesus gifted him with a new life. His previous life that had been characterized by loneliness and limited interactions with the rest of the society was now something of the past. He was not free to join others in singing hymns of praise to God. The crowd was aware of this gift from Jesus, and on behalf of the healed individual, they appreciated Jesus’ the more. Something beautiful had taken place in their midst and they had to make such good news known to whoever dared to listen.
