I have told you through the works I do in my Father’s name that I am the Christ and you still do not believe me. Jesus had kept the community in suspense long enough, and they couldn’t wait any longer. He had to let them know, in plain words, if he was the one they were waiting for. They didn’t want to leave any margin for error. That was too risky. Yes they had seen the works Jesus was doing, and there was some probability of Jesus being the Christ, but that was still not enough. They had to hear from the horse’s mouth yet Jesus was being too stingy with his words. Jesus stood his ground: “find out for yourselves! Those who have seen my works have already made up their minds and have made their stance.” Why would the people not believe in Jesus even after seeing his works? They knew Jesus. They knew his family, and they knew his background. He could not be the Christ, for when the Christ comes, no one will know where he comes from (John 7:27). To them, Christ had to be mysterious; Christ had to be of a different “species” and “speak” a different language. In other words, Christ had to rouse within them a feeling of awe. To them, the Incarnation was an oxymoron. And so they waited for him who had already come.
