A person is justified by faith apart from works of the law. By justification, Paul means the straightening of the relationship between God and creation. Humanity’s rebellion led to the skewing of the relationship that existed between God and creation. Before the rebellion, creation was basking in the abundance of life that was flowing from the Godhead. Before the rebellion, humanity had “direct” knowledge of God and was thus able to live in a right relationship with God. After the rebellion, however, humanity lost this unfettered access to God. As an aid, God gave humanity the law to help it in identifying the right way to live. The law thus became an indispensable aspect of human life, even going as far as becoming the distinguishing factor between the godly and ungodly. The Jews could thus boast of their uniqueness because they had the law. But the law then got superseded by Jesus Christ who became the full revelation of God. Jesus Christ became the sole means of repairing humanity’s relationship with God. Jesus Christ became the law. It is this Jesus that Paul presents as the real thing and the only means for regaining our place at the side of God. This Jesus Christ is accessible to all: to those who had the law (Jews) as well as those who had no knowledge of the law (Gentiles). All that is required is faith.
