Apollos established from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ, and gave assistance to those who had come to believe through grace. Grace is very essential in the life of a believer/disciple. We can even say with confidence that without grace, discipleship is impossible. The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines graces as the undeserved favor that comes from God and which helps us to respond to God’s call. It is grace that makes our salvation possible. It is through grace that Jewish converts like Apollos believed in Jesus as the Christ of God.
Grace sums up the content of the preaching of the early Church as the number of believers continued to grow. Those who were added to the rank of believers were not only those of Jewish background but also included those who were regarded as unworthy of God (pagans). In order to defend their preaching to those who were of Gentile background, disciples such as Apollos pointed to the fact that it was grace, and not one’s ethnicity, that made one worthy of the God of Jesus Christ. They reminded the Jews who were opposed to their work that in Jesus Christ, God had made salvation accessible to all, Jews and Gentiles alike. One did not have to be born a Jew in order to come to the knowledge of God. All that was required of one was belief that in Jesus Christ, a new life with God was begun (for this is what salvation is: a new life with God). This new life is made possible by grace, not works. This is the very life with which Apollos was gifted when he came to know about Jesus. And it is this life that will be graced upon anyone who comes to believe that Jesus is the Christ of God.
