Not everyone who who says to me Lord, Lord, will enter the Kingdom of heaven; but only the one who does the will of my father. What is the will of God? Is the will of God keeping the commandments? Is the will of God being just/merciful/kind/generous? How do we recognize God's will for us? In Jesus of Nazareth, Pope Benedict reminds us that the will of God is not something alien to us. In fact, it is not something that we are to be taught. Every man and woman has knowledge of God's will since it is in the depths of his/her being. God's will is that we are in constant communion with God, the source of our being. We are in communion with God when we are in communion with God's creatures, when we care for the environment and all that has been put under our stewardship. Communion with God, in other words, is the reason and basis of our existence. Without this communion, we not only lose our way, but we also put ourselves at the risk of missing out on the great prize: life of eternal happiness with God. Jesus’ statement was meant to be a challenge to those who had been drawn to him and had become his followers. He was letting them know that it wasn’t enough that they had grown fond of him. They also needed to ensure that they allowed his words to transform them into his partners in mission (the goal of being a disciple is to be like his master). Jesus had come and pointed them to the right direction. Now it was upon them to make that leap and follow that path to the end.
