"Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." This could be one of those hard and almost impossible commands of the Lord to observe. Tolerating and praying for one's enemies is feasible, but loving them appears to be stretching the issue far from our reach. It is a command that we can easily give up on because of its perceived impracticality. As impractical as it may seem to be, it is a command of the Lord that he intended us to observe because it sets us apart as his disciples and as sons and daughters of God. If one were to ask Jesus why the keeping of this commandment is so important, I believe the foregoing would be Jesus’ answer (because you are children of your heavenly Father). A Christian has a calling that is unlike any other. It is a calling that will almost always demand going an extra mile. It is a calling that will demand achieving an almost impossible feat. And I think it is possible, not because Jesus did it (as we sometimes wrongly say), but because he promised to help us do it (I will be with you till the ends of time). It is with the help of Jesus that we can pull through with such demands. You are children of our heavenly Father who is generous in forgiveness. A child takes after the parent. If our Father is generous in forgiveness, so should we, God’s children, be generous in forgiveness. Loving and praying for one's enemies is Jesus solution to the problems of the world. For Jesus knows that if we were to repay each wrong doing that has been exerted upon us, then the world would be engulfed in chaos. The vicious cycle of hatred and fear is broken when forgiveness is sought and given. It is only by being charitable in forgiveness that a Christian becomes a co-creator with God.
