Take care then how you hear…for to anyone who has, more will be given. Jesus follows his explanation of the parable of the sower with a “heads up” to his disciples not to take things for granted. They were blessed not only to be witnesses to Jesus’ mighty deeds but also to listen to his teachings, for the words of Jesus are words that give life (cf. John 6:63), words that provide refreshment to the soul (cf. Psalm 19:7). Now that they had been initiated into the secrets of the kingdom (the explanation of the parable of the sower), the disciples had no excuse but to hold fast to the teachings they had been privileged to hear from Jesus. As long as they allowed the words of Jesus to germinate and take root inside them, their place in the kingdom was assured. However, if they turned deaf ears to the words of Jesus refusing to act on them, then they would end up worse than those who had not had the privilege to listen to Jesus. By listening to Jesus, they had rekindled the light that had been put inside them by God (the spirit of God) at creation. It is this light that they had to keep lit, not only for the good of others, but for their good as well. The words that the disciples were hearing from Jesus were words of life. They were words that unlocked for them the treasures of the universe, making them co-heirs with Jesus. Because of their nature, these words of Jesus engaged those who heard them even as they invited them into action. And it is from this action that the doer of the word benefits (given more). For in the process of putting to action what he has heard from Jesus, a disciple gets to discover himself, knows his strengths and weaknesses, and with the help of the holy Spirit, strives to be built into a holistic individual. When a disciple gets to work on his weakness and improves, his light becomes even more brighter and the list of what he “has” grows.
