The day of the Lord is coming, a day of darkness and gloom. The day of the Lord is a concept that became popular in the literature of the Hebrew people because of the theme of hope contained therein. For the day of the Lord, as originally conceived, was a day/time when the Lord was going to make a definitive intervention in favor of God’s people. It was a day/time when the Lord God was going to defeat all the enemies of Israel and install Israel as their ruler. As such, it was conceived as a festive day to which the people looked forward in joyful anticipation (day of the Lord=salvation). However, we do not get the same enthusiasm when the Prophet Joel speaks to his community about the day of the Lord. To the prophet, the people need not to be so excited about the Lord’s day. He warns them that unless they turn away from their sinful ways and come back to the Lord, the day of the Lord was sure to bring gloom and usher a period of darkness in their life. Because of their persistence in rebellion and stubbornness, the day of the Lord had been turned into a judgment day. The intervention that the Lord brings with him on that day will be nothing but just judgment. The day of the Lord will see the Lord punishing the wicked and rewarding the righteous. But it was not too late for the community. All that they needed to do was to turn away from their sinful ways and come back to the Lord in fasting and loud cries.
